Increasing School Safety

After the Governor’s repeated refusal to negotiate with Republican legislators on the state budget, the NCGA passed H.B. 75 to allocate over $67 million towards school safety initiatives. This legislation--which garnered vast bipartisan support-- will fund support for school resource officers and mental health staff, among other needs. My colleagues and I are committed to protecting students in our state and ensuring that they have the resources they need to succeed in and out of the classroom. This legislation has been sent to the Governor’s desk and I look forward to his approval in order to keep our schools safe.

Budget Surplus

The nonpartisan Fiscal Research Division and Office of State Budget and Management projected that North Carolina will have a $277 million budget surplus for the fiscal biennium of 2019-2021. This comes just weeks after news that our state has a surplus for the 2018-2019 fiscal year of nearly $900 million. Due to responsible spending led by my Republican colleagues in the NCGA, our state has a significant rainy day fund for future disaster relief and increased funding for pay raises for teachers and other public servants. We have continued this effective pattern of conservative spending and pro-growth policies in the current budget, which is still awaiting approval by Governor Cooper.

Ensuring Fair Elections

New maps for state House and Senate districts have been approved with bipartisan supermajority support in both chambers of the NCGA. These maps are nonpartisan and computer generated to comply with prior court rulings. Leaders of both parties in the NCGA joined together in a statement saying the new county groupings are the product of “the most transparent redistricting process in history”. I look forward to the Superior Court’s approval in order to ensure free and fair elections in our state.
