January at the General Assembly
Swearing-In Ceremony
January 6, 2019
On January 6, it was my greatest honor to be sworn-in by N.C. Supreme Court Justice Paul Newby as your North Carolina House District 7 representative at the Middlesex Church of God. This church and this date were significant for many reasons. The Middlesex Church of God is where I grew up, accepted Jesus, was baptized, got married 31 years ago, and where my husband, Johnny, and I dedicated our 3 children. I chose the date January 6 because it is Old Christmas, so that I could celebrate this day and the true meaning of Christmas with all of my supporters. See more from that event here.
Opening Day
January 9, 2019
The 2019-20 legislative session opened on January 9, 2019 at noon. House Speaker Tim Moore (R-Cleveland) and Senate President Pro-Tempore Phil Berger (R-Rockingham) were re-elected to their leadership positions. GOP lawmakers now hold a 65-55 edge in the House, where 72 votes are needed to override a veto, and 29-21 in the Senate, where 30 votes are needed to override.
General Assembly Reconvenes
January 30, 2019
Both chambers of the General Assembly will reconvene at noon on January 30, 2019. I am looking forward to working with my colleagues from across our great state to further the initiatives that have been working for our constituents such as tax cuts, responsible spending, and a balanced budget, and putting more resources towards issues that disproportionately affect our rural communities such as access to broadband.
